Meeting Agenda
Roll Call—Martha Muir, W4MSA
Martha took attendance by recording the names shown on the Go To Meeting screen.
Welcome—Frank Bauer KA3HDO
Happy New Year said Frank as he welcomed everyone to today’s meeting. We had a spectacular 2023 with many ARISS members helping schools make contacts, he said.
1. Call for Acceptance of Minutes--Frank Bauer KA3HDO and Martha Muir W4MSA
The minutes for November’s and December’s meetings were sent out by Martha to the members via email prior to today’s meeting. The December minutes was discussed first. Darin made a motion to accept those minutes. Stefan seconded that motion. The motion passed without dissent.
The minutes for November’s meeting were then presented. Rosalie made a motion to accept them. Ciaran seconded that motion which was adopted without dissent.
The minutes will be sent to Carol Jackson to be posted on the ARISS website.
2. Update on the 40th Anniversary Celebration
Frank said that lots of folks are signing up for the 40th Anniversary Celebration. 40 folks are coming to the delegates meeting. At least 4 astronauts are coming: Tony England (first to use SSTV in space), Ken Cameron (part of an all ham crew on space shuttle), Richard Garriott (1st second generation astronaut in the U.S. to use ham radio in space), and Bill MacArthur (MIR, ARISS, SuitSat). Other astronauts are being invited. Mike Kincaid, head of NASA’s STEM education department, is also coming.
Folks coming to the conference need to get their info to Frank by 1200 UTC tomorrow so that NASA security can clear them. There are a lot of launches going on at KSC these days. There is a good chance we will get to see at least one while we are there.
If you haven’t made your hotel reservations yet, be aware that the ability to get the special rates expire on Friday.
Keep an eye on the 40th Anniversary website for up-to-date information.
Frank said that he doesn’t recognize some of the names on the registration list. He may be contacting some of the delegates for help figuring out who they are.
Diana said that she sent SPARKI kit size and weight information form so that delegates can figure out what components of the kit they want to take home. She will send that form out again.
3. SSTV – Will Marchant and Sergey Samburov
Will said that ARISS-USA had an SSTV event last month. It ran from December 27 to December 30. Six stations send out the images and about 500 people posted their images on the ARISS SSTV server. The Polish team put out a very nice award.
Armand said that the Polish team handled requests for awards, most from North America though there were some from China! Armand said he is ‘full of emotion’ from the comments received expressing thanks and from young people. He thanked Micol for her work with Claudio on this. He also expressed his thanks for everyone working together as a team on this.
Frank thanked Will and Armand on their team’s efforts and these great reports. The team put this all together in a week. There are plans to automate this in the future. Thanks to you all. Thanks to Micol and Jim Reed for their fantastic job with social media covering this event.
Sergey said that they are working on an onboard SSTV event. They are also planning to deliver a new computer to the space station, hopefully by May. Images as early as June, hopefully.
Eric asked Sergey if he could get any info on the new computer and hardware. Sergey said he doesn’t have any documents on this. Eric then asked if it will be possible to send an image from earth to the ISS and then have the ISS send it back down. Sergey said he will check into that. Frank thanked Sergey for this report and the new capabilities that may come with the new equipment.
4. HamTV Update – Randy Berger
Randy stated that HamTV WILL be back on the ISS in 2024. Kerry, Randy said it was delivered to bonded storage at NASA for eventual delivery to the SpaceX-30 rocket.
Frank said there are still some safety and engineering things that need to be done before final flight certification is achieved, but progress is being made.
Graham thanked the team for the update and asked if photos will be made available. Frank answered yes, some will be made available. Frank said he is excited to get this back onboard. He will get slides on this in the Dropbox.
He thanked Randy and the team for getting this all done - both the team in the US and Italy, including Kaiser-Italia.
Any Other Business – there was none.
Frank thanked everyone for attending today. He thanked Oxana for her interpretations.
The next ARISS-I monthly meeting will be the Face to Face meeting at the Kennedy Space Center in February.
Respectfully submitted, Martha Muir, ARISS-I Secretary
