A moment of silence was held in Gaston’s honor. Gaston provided foundational support in the early days of ARISS, particularly through drafting and coordinating the adoption of the ARISS Terms of Reference. He was the ARISS Chair for several years. And he led the development and installation of the Columbus module L/S band antenna systems, getting ESA approval to install them before the launch, fundraising for the project, and working with Pawel Kabacik from the Wroclaw University on antenna development, testing and certification. Before that, he conducted some of the first SAREX contacts from Europe, most notably the 1992 contact between astronaut Dirk Frimout, ON1AFD, with youth at the ESA. Graham shared that Gaston inspired the European parliaments to support ARISS. He will be greatly missed and greatly remembered, Graham concluded.
Frank next introduced Deb Lebair, who will be taking over some of the ARISS website responsibilities from Carol Jackson and metrics activities from Rosalie. Deb might be contacting you if your school or engagement activity report is overdue.
Frank pointed out that this is the last meeting of the year. We’ve had 1700 contacts in 24 years!

1. Call for Acceptance Minutes – Frank Bauer and Martha Muir

Martha sent out the minutes of the November ARISS-I meeting prior to today’s meeting.
Ciaran made a motion to accept the minutes and Rosalie seconded that motion. The motion was accepted without dissent. They will be sent to Deb Lebair to be posted on the ARISS website.

2. HamTV Update – Kenneth Ransom

Kenneth said that the topology assessment has been completed by ESA.It is now
in the review cycle. After that is completed, we can start installing the HamTV system.

3. ARISS-I Delegates Face to Face Meeting – Glenn MacDonell

Glenn said that the first person to book a hotel is Shizuo! The hotel now has an internet link for us to use. Click on the link and select the room type that you want. Glenn was asked to send out that link to ARISS I. He will check into visa requirements.
Glenn said that he is still waiting to hear which representative from CSA will be speaking with us.
The 2025 ARISS-I meeting will be from Monday, April 7, to Wednesday, April 9.

5. Axiom IV – Frank Bauer

Frank said that we will be supporting this venture. Peggy Whitson will be the commander of this crew. The other crew members are from Poland, Hungary, and India. Those three have agreed to be involved making ham radio contacts while on the ISS, at least two school contacts each. The launch is scheduled for no earlier than May 16 and the mission is scheduled to continue for 14 days. (If that schedule holds, perhaps we will do something with this at the Dayton Hamvention.)

Any Other Business

Frank said that the NAVCOM experiment was launched on SpaceX-31 and is close to integration on ISS. It will be using the ARISS S-band antennas to support an experiment on Lunar Navigation. NAVCOM will perform 10 passes over four ground stations in Italy to conduct the experiment. GNSS-like navigation receivers on the moon plan to use a segment of S-band for their navigation signal, which has been coordinated internationally.

Frank said that there is a proposal in work that would be a partnership with NASA-KSC for an externally mounted payload on Artemis IV. This would include an amateur radio payload located at the lunar south pole. This will require us to reinvigorate AREX if NASA asks for a step 2 proposal.

Mission Opportunity #1 (MO#1). Frank expects to talk more about this at the January and/or February meetings. Because ARISS is under a Non-Disclosure Agreement during feasibility and initial development, it currently involves a limited number of ARISS team members, mainly the USA and ESA teams. This project is supported by members from Education, Operations, and Engineering.

Will said that the next SSTV event will run until January 5. Frank showed attendees a ‘rough draft’ of the 12 images, which includes an ESA tribute to Gaston. Will said he will announce this program via social media before school lets out on Friday.

Frank wished everyone a Happy Holiday season. Merry Christmas. Happy New Year. Happy Hannukah. Happy whatever you celebrate.

We need to continue to build up the team.We will talk about this at the Face-to-Face meeting.

Next Meeting: January 21, 2025.

November 19, 2024

https://www.ariss.org/meeting-minutes/november-19-2024

https://www.ariss.org/meeting-minutes/november-19-2024#comments

Uncategorized

Minutes of ARISS International Monthly MeetingGo To Meeting/TeleconferenceNovember 19, 2024 – 1200 UTCParticipants Oliver AmendTanya AndersonFrank BauerRandy BergerStefan DombrowskiShizuo EndoAna GuzmanMicol Ivancic Glenn MacDonellWill MarchantLou McFadinCiaran MorganMartha MuirJan PoppeliersKenneth RansomJim ReedSergey SamburovGraham ShirvilleDave TaylorRosalie WhiteInterpreter: Maria Pogodina &n [...]

Minutes of ARISS International Monthly Meeting
Go To Meeting/Teleconference
November 19, 2024 – 1200 UTC

Participants

Oliver Amend
Tanya Anderson
Frank Bauer
Randy Berger
Stefan Dombrowski
Shizuo Endo
Ana Guzman
Micol Ivancic
Glenn MacDonell
Will Marchant
Lou McFadin
Ciaran Morgan
Martha Muir
Jan Poppeliers
Kenneth Ransom
Jim Reed
Sergey Samburov
Graham Shirville
Dave Taylor
Rosalie White

Interpreter: Maria Pogodina

Meeting November 19, 2024

Roll Call— Martha Muir W4MSA

Martha recorded the participants in today’s meeting by recording the names on the GoToMeeting screen.

Welcome – Frank Bauer

Frank welcomed everyone to today’s meeting and said this month has been spectacular with several outstanding school contacts with educational activities. Also there were two wonderful SSTV events, one of which ended yesterday. Thank you for everything you do.

1. Call for Acceptance of Minutes – Frank Bauer and Martha Muir
Martha sent out the minutes of the October ARISS-I meeting prior to today’s meeting.

Stefan made a motion to accept the minutes and Ciaran seconded that motion. The motion was accepted without dissent. After that, the HamTV will be integrated into the Columbus module. Frank mentioned that there are new people at NASA and at ESA working on this assessment and have started from scratch, which is why it is taking so long. Frank asked Oliver if we can get Ham TV CAD model to move this along faster. Oliver said he will ask Kaiser.

An HDMI converter is needed to support the new cameras on-board ISS. Randy expects that the HDMI converter will be launched to the ISS mid-next year.

3. ARISS-I Delegates Face to Face Meeting – Oliver Amend and Glenn MacDonell
Glenn said the hotel we used at the last Face to Face meeting in Canada has agreed to hold several rooms for ARISS at a good price-point. People who will be attending should contact the hotel and book their rooms directly. For the special rates at the hotel, mention that you are with the ARISS delegation. He has asked the CSA for a presentation on their Lunar Gateway initiatives and they are working on it.
Oliver said he is collecting suggested topics to discuss at the meeting and will sort them into the meeting days in the near future.
Frank asked everyone to get suggested topics to Oliver by December 15. He also asked Glenn to put together the name of the hotel, the special rates, and contact information for the hotel and send it to the officers for distribution to the team. Oliver will send this out to everyone.
Frank thanked Glenn and Oliver for their work on our next Face to Face meeting.

4. SSTV Update – Sergey Samburov
Sergey said that he is very happy with the results of the SSTV transmissions, which include images of the first use of ham radio in human space flight. Hams, educators and youth from all over the world were involved and received diplomas. Thanks to everyone involved in this, especially Armand and Slawek.
Will said that image gallery has been moved to cloud based image storage system at this address: https://ariss-usa.org/ARISS_SSTV. There is also a new method to request a certificate but there were a couple of glitches during operations that have since been fixed. This new system aligns well with the awards program that the team in Poland has been supporting for so many years.
Rosalie thanked Will for adding a “Please Donate” button to the web page. We have already received donations from it.
Oliver said an Indonesian group had their own certificates that featured an image of Owen Garriott. A Chilean group also had their own certificate.
A map showed SSTV from all over the world. There was a lot of activity in the USA, Europe, and Asia.
Sergey said would like to do another SSTV event during the last week of December and the first week of January. The images will include seasonal greetings and images of great ARISS related activities of the past year and asked international folks to start gathering their images to be used.
Sergey thanked Slawek, Armand, and Will for their work curating the images and certificates. He would like to prepare some special awards for them.
**Action Item: Each region should provide 2 images to be used for this event. We will add a Seasons Greeting image and Sergey will provide 3 images. Please send your two images to Frank by December 10.

AOB Graham said that Noel’s presentation was aimed at folks who do not know much about ARISS.
Frank said that when the HamTV unit was moved to a new location because another payload is now in the planned spot for HamTV, the HamTV cable was not long enough. Thanks to the fact that we have the MarconISSta cables on-board, one of the MarconISSta cables was long enough to support HamTV operations. “It is nice to have extra equipment available on the ISS.”

3. ARISS-I Delegates Face to Face Meeting – Oliver Amend and Glenn MacDonell
Oliver asked Glenn for any updates about the facilities for the Face to Face meeting. Glenn said he is working the dates with his contacts at the CSA. Oliver thanked Glenn for keeping us up to date on this.
Frank said that we should add someone from CSA to speak about Gateway at the meeting. Glenn said we would probably want to hear Ken Gutswaldy talk about this. Glenn will ask him about this.
Frank said we need to ensure we have a robust virtual meeting capability. Glenn said he will check into this. Rosalie said we had virtual meeting capability when ARISS-I met there before.

4. SSTV Activities – Sergey Samburov
Frank congratulated Sergey on a successful SSTV event. Sergey thanked Frank for his comment. He said it took several years but it was successful. It was not easy with the new computer but with great effort we had great results. It was joint effort of the whole ARISS team. It was a good idea to be able to do this in the Service Module. Thanks to Southwest University for their work on this. The number of diplomas (certificates) earned is unknown but Armand may be able to tell us.
Frank asked Sergey if we will able to use different modes with the new software. Sergey said he will ask Southwest University to work on this.
Will thanked Sergey and his team. There have been more than 7000 submittals so far from over 2700 individuals, from over 200 high school or younger students, from over 200 teachers in high schools or younger, and from over 200 college level students and teachers. This was a tremendously popular activity.
Oliver showed a show of several of Armand’s slides as Armand presented his comments: Participants commented on the quality of the slides. Requests for awards are still coming in. The awards were created by Slawek Szymanowski. He is glad that SSTV is online again. Thanks for all who made this possible including the folks on the ISS.
Oliver thanked Armand and the PZK team.
