1. Call for Acceptance of Minutes--Frank Bauer KA3HDO and Martha Muir W4MSA
The minutes for November’s meeting were not available yet so no decision on approval was made.
2. 40th Anniversary Update – Frank Bauer
There has been a lot of time and a lot of school contacts since Owen Garriott made the first ham radio contact in 1983. This year we will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of that event. Be sure to watch the video of Richard Garriott talking about his father and Richard’s own adventures with ham radio, space and more. You can watch the video of Frank Bauer’s interview with Richard Garriott on the ARISS YouTube channel.
There are some time critical things with regards to the activities at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). We are scheduled to get a special private tour of KSC thanks to Kevin Zari. This requires special clearance by security at the KSC. Frank will need to provide attendees’ passport info to the security office well before the Face-to-Face meeting.
Another upcoming deadline is reserving hotel rooms with the special rates that have been negotiated for us. The deadline for the Courtyard by Marriott is December 23 and the others is by January 19.
Frank sent out the tentative agenda for the conference. For the Face-to-Face meetings, we can get into the building at 8 AM, with the meetings starting at 8:30 AM. If you would like to take pieces of the SPARKI Kit home with you, let Diana know. Size and weight measurements are on the request form so you can determine what will fit in your luggage. Please send questions and comments to the ARISS-I officers. Randy Berger plans to set up a meeting of Technical/Engineering folks at the Marriott during the meeting.
Shizuo suggested that we aim at low earth orbit and deep space missions. Frank said we plan ’d have to try to move things around to do this. Kenneth asked if any Axiom representatives will be at the meeting. Frank said the team is working on this. Emmanuelle asked about sponsors and companies coming to the meeting. Again, Frank said the team is working on it. It is important for folks to register for the conference; we need to know who and how many folks are coming.
On Thursday, February 22, there will be tours of the KSC Visitors Center and the special bus tour of the KSC. That evening, there will be a reception and exhibits. Tanya said she is working to contact ARISS alumni, former students who were involved in their schools’ ARISS Contact to get their impressions of that event. She is asking for one to two minute videos of them and their comments.
Mike Kincaid, head of NASA’s STEM Education Office, will be at our conference. Frank has a list of astronauts who were involved in SAREX, MirEX, and/or ARISS that he is trying to invite to our conference. Watch the 40th Anniversary link on the ariss.org webpage for updates and more info.
Starting on January 15, the fees for registering for the 40th Anniversary Celebration and the Anniversary Gala go up by $25 each. Please encourage folks to register before that.
3. Report and Status of SSTV
Sergey was not able to attend today’s meeting so Frank presented info about the December 16 SSTV event. It did not happen.Astronaut Loral O’Hara went to the Columbus module to listen to any signal but did not hear anything. If it stays broken, some folks in the US may try a limited voice repeater SSTV experiment sending out things like “Seasons Greetings” and similar. This will be regional only, not reach world-wide.
4. HamTV – Randy Berger
Randy reported that he, Kerry, Lou, and Frank have been working on the final items to certify the HamTV for a flight on SpaceX-30. They hope to have HamTV back on the ISS by the middle of 2024.
Randy extended thanks to the Italian team for their help with HamTV.
