Welcome—Frank Bauer KA3HDO

Frank welcomed everyone to today’s meeting, especially Gaston Bertels.  He thanked everyone for all they have done for ARISS in the past month.

  1. Call for Acceptance of Minutes--Frank Bauer KA3HDO and Martha Muir W4MSA  [Decisional]

Eric made a motion to accept the minutes of the July meeting.Dave Taylor seconded that motion which was accepted without dissent. The minutes will be sent to Carol Jackson to be posted on the ARISS-I website.

   2. East Coast USA Slow Scan Event at ARRL Teachers Institute July 2023 -  Frank Bauer and Will Marchant

Frank thanked Will for preparing the slides for this presentation.  This event was the first North American attempt to send Slow Scan images up through the ISS on July 26. Stations K6DUE and AB1OC sent these signals.  One image was sent in two modes:  robot 36 and robot 72.   There were two passes over the east coast of the USA which were picked up and down the east coast from Canada down to Florida.  There was a strong social media posting about this event.  75 images were submitted to the ARISS gallery by 60 participants including teachers at the ARRL Teachers Institute. Teachers there were very excited about this.  They had used antennas they  had built as part of the institute.

Rosalie said that 27 people, including the CEO of ARRL, got involved in this, about one third of the ARRL staff.  The CEO said he was very pleased with this event.  Two of the three major television stations posted stories about the event.  An ARRL staff member stated that this ‘is really cool!’

Frank said that this was an experiment, that he was unsure if this could be done on the voice repeater.

   3. 40th Anniversary Celebration Update – Frank Bauer

While showing slides of the Space Shuttle SAREX, Mir MIREX, and ISS ARISS programs, Frank reminded folks of the current plans:  February 20-21:  ARISS-I Face to Face meeting;   February 22:  Tours of the Kennedy Space Center;  February 23 -24:  40th Anniversary Conference with the Gala dinner on Friday night under the Space Shuttle Atlantis.  Be aware:  these dates may change as Frank tries to avoid holding this during “Spring Break,” when hotel rates are higher.  Give Frank about two weeks to figure this out.  We have the venues reserved; he’s just working on the hotels.  The venues are not free so Frank is working on getting some sponsors to cover those costs.  ARISS-USA may front some of the deposits for some of these items to be reimbursed later.

A flyer about the 40th Anniversary Celebrations will be available once the dates have been settled.  Lou asked if we can bring guests.  Yes, Frank said enthusiastically.   This is encouraged.

AOB  (Any Other Business)

  •  Gaston asked about the status of HamTV.  Frank said that a spectrum analysis of the unit indicated a need for a filter to lessen the interference with other vehicles traveling to the ISS.  There are plans to send the HamTV back to the ISS with a filter next spring or summer.
  • Rosalie gave congratulations to Mic for her weeklong space camp.  14 students were taught about space and they listened to the crossband repeater on the ISS as it passed over.
  • Rosalie also congratulated Stefan for his summer camp on STEM and ham radio, including info about ARISS contacts.  150 students in Belgium and 75 students in Luxemburg participated.
  • Frank said that ARISS-USA is looking for a Director of Education since Kathy Lamont has resigned from this position.  He is interviewing candidates and hopes to have a new Director by the next meeting.
