Welcome—Frank Bauer KA3HDO
Frank welcomed everyone to today’s meeting and thanked everyone for another wonderful month of wonderful ARISS activities.
1. Call for Acceptance of Minutes--Frank Bauer KA3HDO and Martha Muir W4MSA [Decisional]
Darin made a motion to accept the minutes of the June meeting which was prepared by Rosalie White.Jan seconded that motion. The motion was adopted without dissent. The minutes will be sent to Carol Jackson for posting.
2. 40th Anniversary Celebration Status – Frank Bauer
While showing slides of the Space Shuttle SAREX, Mir MIREX, and ISS ARISS programs, Frank said that plans are coming together for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of what has evolved out of Owen Garriott’s initial use of Amateur Radio in space in 1983 on STS-9.This allowed astronauts to talk directly with ham radio operators on the ground and the public via ham radio. In the years following this led to school contacts, STEM activities, experiments, SuitSat/Radioskaf, and more.
In person celebrations will include the 2024 Face to Face meeting of ARISS-I, tours of the Kennedy Space Center, and then the 40th Anniversary Conference activities. Those activities will include exhibit booths, VIP keynote speakers (astronauts/cosmonauts), and a Gala dinner with VIP speakers as well. The venue for all of this will be the Center for Space Education located at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor’s Center. It has lots of room to accommodate lots of people.
Tentative Itinerary:Tuesday and Wednesday, February 20-21:ARISS-I Face to Face meetingThursday, February 22:Tours of the Kennedy Space Center.Friday and Saturday, February 23 -24:40th Anniversary Conference with the Gala dinner on Saturday or Friday night. The timing of all this is based on Richard Garriott’s availability (Richard is Owen’s son).
Design costs to be inclusive of costs for breakfasts and lunches. We have two options for the location of the Gala dinner:at the conference center’s ballroom or under the space shuttle Atlantis.Having it under the Space Shuttle Atlantis would cost more and would require getting sponsorship for this.Details are to be worked out.
Glenn asked if we can release this info to others.Frank said to wait until he confirms the dates with the venue, then yes. Frank said he will send out the slide deck with all this info.We need a big group working on this. Please nominate individuals to get involved in this.
Frank said he expects 50 to 60 people at the Face to Face meeting and up to 150-200 at the 40th Anniversary celebration. An online registration site for this will be set up once the venue is set and costs are understood.Invite member organizations.Look at the help wanted page for this event and volunteer for a task.Dave Taylor asked about formal invitations for supporting groups like AMSAT and IARU.We should generate a letter with photos.Oliver suggested we wait a couple of weeks for the details to settle out.
Shizuo said that the JARL is considering making a donation to the 40th Anniversary celebration. Now that there is a new president of this organization this might take more time to secure. Frank thanked Shizuo for his efforts with this. Glenn said that Canadian groups were considering a donation towards this, too.
3. HamTV Status Update – Frank Bauer
Frank said that in December of 2022, NASA did a spectrum study of the HamTV equipment. It showed that there is some interference between HamTV and some visiting vehicles and new ISS communications capabilities when HamTV is on.With so many visiting vehicles and communications systems, this would require HamTV being turned on and off many times which is impractical, since HamTV requires astronaut intervention to do so.A possible solution to this would be to install a filter in series with the HamTV.This will result in a much cleaner spectrum but will also result in some signal loss.It will also delay the return of HamTV to the ISS as the filter is designed, flight certified and installed. It is no longer scheduled to fly on NG-19 but there are hopes to fly it ‘soonest’ once the filter is installed.Frank concluded his remarks about HamTV saying that it is disappointing to have this delay in returning it to space.
4. ARISS at recent conferences ham radio conventions & agency events – Oliver Amend, Armand Budzianowski , Others
At Oliver’s request, Frank spoke first about activities in Florida at the SPACE conference for educators. He said that 22 educators attended the ‘Educate the Educator’ workshop and were given SPARKI kits and lessons on how to use them.ARISS had a booth in the SPACE Exhibit Hall, allowed teachers to ask questions during an ARISS contact, and had a forum there.Frank said that that the SPARKI kit is now operational.
Oliver spoke about the Teachers Session by ESA at Nordwyck.Micol and Oliver attended. Dave Honus, too.He spoke about SSTV.The conference can be viewed on YouTube.Armand’s 3 minute video about ARISS was well received.Teachers were interested in the video.ARISS was mentioned in several presentations.Oliver gave ‘big thanks’ to Armand and Micol.Micol added that she will be running a summer camp at the end of July. There will be five days of activities focused on a space theme.
