Meeting Agenda

Roll Call—Rosalie White, K1STO

Rosalie took attendance by recording the names shown on the Go To Meeting screen.

Welcome—Oliver Amend, DG6BCE

Oliver welcomed and thanked everyone for attending today’s meeting.  He presided, reporting that Frank and Martha are traveling to an educator conference at Kennedy Space Center, for ARISS. Oliver thanked Rosalie for taking the minutes at this meeting.

1.   Call for Acceptance of Minutes – Oliver Amend, DG6BCE & Rosalie White, K1STO [Decisional]

For the ARISS-International Monthly Meeting on May 16, 2023, Martha recorded the minutes and distributed the file to ARISS Delegates.  Rosalie asked if anyone had comments regarding those minutes. With nothing heard, she asked for a motion on the minutes. Stefan Dombrowski moved to accept the minutes; Ciaran Morgan seconded the motion. Hearing no objections, Rosalie stated the minutes were adopted and Carol Jackson would post the file on the ARISS-I web page.

2.  Axiom 2 Status Update – Oliver Amend, DG6BCE  [Informational]

Oliver gave a summary of the ARISS portions of the Axiom-2 mission and its four private astronauts, all with amateur radio licenses. Three of them supported ARISS activities; Peggy Whitson needed to focus on her duties as mission commander. John Shoffner, KO4MJC supported two ARISS school contacts—one was for youth with major medical issues at the Children’s Inn at NIH in Bethesda, MD. The other ARISS contact was for the Middlesboro Middle School in Middlesboro, Kentucky. Saudi crew members Ali Alqarni, 7Z1AJ and Rayyanah Barnawi, 7Z1RB supported an ARISS contact with youth invited to the Saudi Space Commission in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. John Shoffner pleased a large number of ham radio operators when he got on the air to talk to many hams around the world. Oliver said the ARISS team implemented lessons learned from the Axiom-1 mission and so this second mission was easier.  The ARISS-International Officers concluded this mission was a success and they thanked all ARISS team members who worked on Axiom activities.

3.  40th Anniversary Celebration Status – Oliver Amend, DG6BCE [Informational]

Oliver showed a meeting chart for this topic, displaying an image of the new 40th anniversary poster. It depicts scenes and facts from the past 40 years of amateur radio on space vehicles. The ARISS-International Board would like to hear more ideas for the 40th anniversary celebration. They ask everyone on the ARISS team to volunteer in some way for the events—please email comments to Astro-hams-40yrs@ariss-i.org.  Oliver commented on celebration activities as follows.

  • The targeted timeframe is early 2024. The first week of February seems best for the majority of the ARISS team. Location is the Kennedy Space Center area.

The planning is still under discussion, the following schedule concept is an example and not yet confirmed:

  • Tuesday and Wednesday (TBC): ARISS-I Annual Meeting. It is hoped that many ARISS team members can attend.

  • Thursday and Friday (TBC): two-day ham radio conference featuring 40-year celebration activities. Crewmembers who supported amateur radio contacts on Shuttle, Mir, and ISS missions will be invited and asked to give talks; some crewmembers have already been invited. This conference is for everyone who has participated in the 40 years of amateur radio on space vehicles—and for ideas on the future. A variety of topics will be discussed and presentations given. The conference will be open to the public.

  • Friday evening (TBC): ARISS Gala Dinner for everyone

  • Saturday and Sunday (TBC): ARISS Educate the Educator workshop for teachers to learn how to use the SPARKI (Space Pioneers Amateur Radio Kit Initiative) Kit in a classroom. (if possible to manage)

At each upcoming ARISS-International meeting, the team will hear updates on all of these activities. Please volunteer.

Any Other Business

Oliver asked Sergey Samburov about the resumption of SSTV sessions. Sergey said a cargo vehicle is scheduled tentatively to launch in the second half of August. If the schedule stays firm, and depending on crew time, he plans a first SSTV session in September. Sergey wants to have two SSTV sessions for the 40th anniversary before January 2024.  He said the team should start working together on images, now. He will provide Mir images and Frank had said he would lead the team on the overall complement of images.

Oliver thanked everyone for participating in today’s meeting. He thanked the interpreter Alexandra Tussing, and he thanked Ana Guzman for setting up the GoToMeeting.

The next ARISS-International telecon meeting will be July 18, 2023 at 1100 UTC.
