Meeting Agenda
Roll Call—Martha took attendance by using the names shown on the Go To Meeting screen.
Welcome—Frank Bauer, KA3HDO
Frank welcomed everyone to today’s meeting. He was excited to have participated in the first Face to Face meeting in three years last month. It is important to get together with everyone like that. Thanks to the European team for hosting us, especially Oliver for organizing the meetings.
Oliver said that he was glad to have the Face to Face meeting this year in Noordwijk. Jörg Hahn and Dave Honess welcomed us to ESTEC. It was sad not to have the camaraderie of our Canadian colleagues on site. It was sad not to have Sergey join us, either.
We talked about Axiom 2 and 3. This reminded us that we are an international organization. We talked about ARISS 2.0, the future of ARISS. Please send feedback about ARISS 2.0 to the ARISS-I officers. Randy gave an interesting presentation on ARISS engineering. Phil Crumb presented the digital radio communicator for the ISS. We are now working with partners – Gateway and different space agencies for future developments and operations in cislunar space.
We talked about the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of human spaceflight. Thanks for everyone who has sent in ideas for the celebrations.
No committees were organized and no voting was needed. Presentations are in the dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/kb8yb57hw7qa0xsomsiqv/h?dl=0&rlkey=ewytru0n7177hawg10egulttt.
Thanks to Eric for creating the patch for the meeting at Noordwijk. The patch will be mailed to the participants who were not on site. Thanks to Graham for operating QO-100 on the deck outside the restaurant. It caught the interest of ESTEC employees.
Frank: “Oliver, you did a great job.” We do have the dropbox available. It contains the agenda, reports, presentations, and photos.
2. Update on HamTV – Frank Bauer
[Informational]
Frank said the the HamTV unit was delivered to NASA for flight onboard the Northrup-Grumman 19 flight which is scheduled to fly no earlier than July 7. Spectrum tests on the unit revealed that the noise floor does get raised in visiting vehicles. We will have to turn off HamTV when visiting vehicles dock or undock from the ISS. This should not be a huge issue. We are working with the spectrum management team on HamTV is in use while the Russian EKTC is operational. It appears that issue depends on what and where the visiting vehicle is docked. This is still a work in progress. We will continue to work with NASA on this.
3. 40th Anniversary of Ham Radio in Human Space Flight – Frank Bauer
[Informational]
Frank showed a poster made for the 40th anniversary celebration. See: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7erd02ike4ljmrr/40th%20Anniversary%20Poster%20Concept%2024x36%20v3.jpg?dl=0 In December of 1983 Owen Garriott made the first ham radio communication from the space shuttle. This led to SAREX, MIREX, and ARISS.
In early 2024, we will have a conference and celebration at or near the Kennedy Space Center.Current plans include a two day ARISS-I
meeting and then a two day 40th Anniversary Conference. Finally, there will be a one day tour of the Kennedy Space Center area. Frank said he has contacted Richard Garriott and will work with him to schedule the dates for all of this. Frank will let everyone know the dates at the next ARISS-I meeting.
Frank has set up a special email address for volunteers and sponsors to use for this celebration:Astro-hams-40yrs@ariss-i.org. It is
important to get sponsors to help pay for the costs of this. Sponsors will be listed in a booklet to be handed out at the gala. We will also need a number of volunteers to do things in preparation for this big event. We need to set up a sub-committee with at least one person per region on it. Oliver pointed out that this is not a regional activity but an international one. The more participation, the richer the experience.
Any Other Business
-Will Marchant asked Sergey if there is any news on SSTV. Sergey responded that they have a plan to deliver to the ISS in August a replacement for an adapter that broke which would mean there could be more images sent down in September but schedules are subject to change.
-Graham asked how to continue the work on the digital communicator. Frank suggested they set up a meeting of folks to talk about this. Perhaps they will meet twice a month (or more often).
-Oliver announced that Francesco is now serving as president of AMSAT-Italia, taking over for Emanuelle. He expressed thanks to Emanuelle for his years of service to AMSAT-Italia and congratulations to Francesco.
-Frank said that some of us are heading to Hamvention, the world’s largest gathering of Amateur Radio operators. ARISS has a booth there and will host a major forum and some mini-forums on education, engineering, and spaceflight operations.
-Axiom 2’s flight is scheduled for May 21. There will be four licensed Amateur Radio operators onboard. Peggy Whitson will be serving as commander of this mission and will not be getting on the radio. John Shoffner is a long time ham and has two ARISS contacts scheduled and ‘more.’ There are two Saudi private astronauts onboard, both licensed with special Saudi callsigns, who will do two ARISS contacts with Saudi schools.
-Oliver announced that he is looking forward to Friedrichshafen in June. ARISS will have a presence there including Oliver, Mic, and Francesco.
-Rosalie said that Christy Hunter will want to know if she needs to do a press release for the Axiom crew and when it will be released. Frank said that Jim Reed is working with Axiom on what we can communicate about this. Keep Frank and Kenneth in the loop about this. It is good to know how to work with commercial space agencies. Turn on and listen during the Axiom 2 flight.
-Glenn congratulated Frank on putting a lot of information (today’s meeting) into one hour! Frank responded by saying that we are doing a lot of stuff! It’s amazing how well we work together (as Sergey said). We have many moving parts – we need to keep it going!
Next meeting: June 20 at 1100 UTC.
Thanks, Olga.
