- Oct 2: Students at Pell Elementary School in Newport, RI enjoyed their interview of Ricky Arnold during their ARISS contact. He answered 14 questions while 1,050 people listened. Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo went to Pell to take part in the day’s event, helping two young students ask their questions -- one about “girl astronauts.” Media coverage included 3 TV stations and the Providence Journal and Providence Business News. - Students at Pell regularly engage in a curriculum rich in STEM exploration and attend weekly STEM classes. Grades 2-5 are introduced to the engineering design process, coding using MIT Media Lab’s Scratch and Code.org, and STEM careers. K-1 students explore computational thinking using on and off-line algorithmic tools. Students took part in many space-themed and ham radio activities; the ARISS contact was the highlight and tied to UN World Space Week. Next week students will engage in activities celebrating “Space Unites the World.”
- The school’s namesake, US Senator Claiborne Pell championed the federal “Basic Educational Opportunity Grant” known as the Pell Grant, which has allowed millions of low-income students to attain post-secondary education. Pell believed education should be the right of all citizens in order to better their lives and to strengthen the nation.
- Oct 8: Students at Allen Park Elementary School, Lee County School District in Ft. Myers, FL had a successful ARISS contact with Serena Aunon-Chancellor. Photos, details, and statistics will soon be forwarded by educators; these will be shared in the next ARISS report.
